If you’re like me, you’ve probably got an assortment of very cool, almost completely unused kitchen tools and appliances. There are SO MANY available, and all seem like such a good idea at the time!
- The ice-cream maker.
- The waffle iron.
- The indoor grill.
- The fondue pot.
- The sandwich machine.
- The pizza stones.
- The slow-cooker.
- The pressure cooker.
- The food processor.
- The dehydrator.
- The juicer…
OK – I actually DO use some of these pretty often – I’m a big fan of the pressure cooker (at least once or twice a week in the winter; less often in summer). And we finally bought a really good juicer (this is the third one we’ve bought!), which we use regularly (several times a week). I use the food processor frequently. And my kids love waffles, so I use the waffle iron maybe once a month.
But none of them can compete, in terms of use-frequency, with my Vitamix. I’ve had it for over 5 years, and unless we’re away on vacation, it’s generally used at least once each day. Mostly to make fruit drinks or green smoothies (my kids make their own fruit smoothies, and I have green smoothies for breakfast every day). Sometimes to make soup. Or salad dressing. Occasionally to make waffle batter.
With my Vitamix, I can toss whole flaxseed into my smoothie, and know that it won’t just go around and around – it’ll actually be completely ground by the time I’m done. I can blend leafy greens, and not end up with big pieces. I can throw in frozen berries and banana, and it handles them no problem (before my vitamix, I burned out one high-end blender motor in less than two weeks! Luckily, it was still under warranty). Basically, my Vitamix can take anything I’m apt to want to blend. I like that!
My parents bought their Vitamix about 6 years before I did, and my mom makes healthy soups with it several times a week. Smoothies, too, but that’s not part of their daily routine. Yet.
At any rate – the point I’m trying to make is – this is one kitchen tool that earns a prominent place on your counter, so that there will be no reason why you can’t use it ALL THE TIME!

I’ve received a few questions about HOW LONG a smoothie should be blended in a vitamix.
In general, you’ll want to blend it as little as possible while still getting the consistency you’re looking for. I tend to do mine in two parts – first I put in water, almonds, flaxseed, and leafy greens, and blend that on high for 10-20 seconds (til the almonds are broken down). Then I add the frozen berries and frozen banana, and blend another 10-20 seconds.
The reason I do this is mostly that if I added the frozen fruit before blending the nuts and seeds, the vitamix would have to blend a lot longer to break down the nuts and seeds – and that would make the frozen fruit warm up, and my smoothie wouldn’t be so nice and thick and frosty anymore.
