Cold morning? Start the day with a hearty bowl of porridge!

Where I live, we’ve had a few weeks of beautiful weather the past while – after the long, cool, and frequently rainy summer, it was pretty wonderful.  I enjoyed cycling to work in shorts and a tank top.   Enjoyed going for walks in the sunshine after supper… This morning, the weather shifted back to cold and rainy.  My kids were clamouring for a nice, hot, home-made breakfast – so I made a delicious pot of porridge.  I’ve actually never been a porridge-person – I don’t tend to like the texture much – but I worked with what I had, and ended up...

A nutritious, balanced breakfast is a great way to start your day – it gives you the energy you need to be energetic and productive through the morning. Strangely, almost 40% of adults regularly skip breakfast. Trying to lose weight, too busy to prepare anything, nothing in the house… – these are just some of the reasons people give for not eating breakfast. We saw bison, grizzlies, elk, a young brown bear, mule deer, as well as geysers, mud-volcanos, and some truly incredible scenery (don’t miss the walk down to the brink of the Lower Falls – it was spectacular!) Went to...

During the three-day raw detox that I just finished, desserts were off-limits. But I had lots of time to spend browsing through raw food ‘cookbooks’, and raw food websites, and I saw a lot of desserts that looked really yummy! So, tonight I decided that I’d been virtuous enough all day long (watermelon smoothies all day long, with veggies and hummus for supper) that I had really earned a treat for dessert. One recipe that caught my attention was raw chocolate pudding. I couldn’t find the recipe this evening, but I remembered roughly what the ingredients were –...

Looking to Lose Weight? Try a Cleansing Green Smoothie

Posted by on May 12, 2011 | 5 comments

Several months ago, I posted my favorite Green Smoothie recipe, and people have been very enthusiastic about it! Since then, I attended a Raw Food workshop, and was told that leaving out the concentrated fats and proteins (almonds and flaxseed, in this case) would turn my smoothie into a low-fat,  easily-digested and highly cleansing drink, appropriate for daily consumption during a 10 day detox, for example. I was fairly certain that I would get hungry well before lunchtime with these revised smoothies, but decided to give it a shot. I doubled the amount of greens, berries, and water, left...
