Home Remedies

I just read an article on preventing Urinary Tract Infections – something of interest to me, because I’ve had a few of them in the past few years – and there was a comment on the article with what looked like a really good suggestion. It occurred to me that there are probably a lot of great home remedies out there worth trying, before resorting to antibiotics and other modern medicine treatments. So, I figured I’d post this one here, and invite my readers to post their own.

Urinary tract infections:
It could also be an alkaline imbalance, which has similar symptoms to a UTI (bladder pressure, the need to pee, painful urination). I suggest drinking an 8-10 ounce glass of water with 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar and 1 tablespoon baking soda (it will fizz up), followed by a couple of glasses of water. If it’s an alkaline imbalance, you’ll feel relief within about an hour. Drink a couple of glasses of that a day for a few days.  [yahoo user Minty Me]

I actually tried a variation on this last time I had UTI symptoms – I had half a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water that evening, the next morning, and three more evenings after that. Symptoms disappeared – AND haven’t come back since! Which is kind of significant, because I’d had 3 UTIs in the previous 6 months (yes, verified by a doctor, and treated with antibiotics) and now it’s been 9 months since the last one. I’ll give this one two thumbs up (that said, UTIs left untreated can lead to kidney infections, which can be dangerous. My suggestion – try this first, but if the symptoms persist, then see a doctor).

Sore throats:
Something I swear by to deal with a sore throat – before it progresses into full-blown illness – is Oil of Oregano. Take 5 drops under your tongue (and yes, it’ll burn). Don’t drink water (or anything else) for a while afterward; give it a chance to do its job, which is killing whatever’s causing the sore throat.

Kidney stones:
My husband had kidney stones about a month ago.  Horrific, debilitating pain.  Neither of us had ever had any experience with them – I’d heard of them, but really had no idea.  He was in such a lot of pain that he actually had me call an ambulance.  They shot him up with morphine, did a CT scan (or MRI, or ultrasound, or whatever it is they do to take a look at what’s happening), and told him there was only one stone, and it was relatively small, and it was almost through, so suck it up and deal with it until it passes.  OK, I suspect they didn’t actually use the words “suck it up”, but that was the basic message.  They prescribed some kind of mega-painkiller, and sent him home.  That was Saturday morning.  The rest of Saturday, all day Sunday, and all day Monday, he was in overpowering pain, with brief respites each time he was able to take the next painkiller.  Then, in desperation, we decided to try a home remedy that I found online.  1 1/2 shots of apple cider vinegar.  Followed by a bunch of water.  Within 2 minutes he could feel the pain disappearing.  Within 10 minutes the stone, broken down into small chunks, passed through him.  Coincidence?  I think not.  I’ve told everyone I know about this, and we’ll definitely be trying this out if ever we have to deal with kidney stones again.
