Looking to Lose Weight? Try a Cleansing Green Smoothie

Posted by on May 12, 2011 | 5 comments

Several months ago, I posted my favorite Green Smoothie recipe, and people have been very enthusiastic about it! Since then, I attended a Raw Food workshop, and was told that leaving out the concentrated fats and proteins (almonds and flaxseed, in this case) would turn my smoothie into a low-fat,  easily-digested and highly cleansing drink, appropriate for daily consumption during a 10 day detox, for example. I was fairly certain that I would get hungry well before lunchtime with these revised smoothies, but decided to give it a shot. I doubled the amount of greens, berries, and water, left...

Juicing? What To Do With All That Leftover Pulp

Posted by on May 8, 2011 | 3 comments

If you’ve taken up juicing, and especially if you’ve got a masticating juicer (Champion, Omega, Green Star…), then in addition to that wonderful juice, you’ve probably got a bunch of delicious, high-fiber pulp left over. You may be composting it, which is good – certainly better than just throwing it in the garbage. But if you’re thinking there must be something you could use it for – you’re right! The past few weeks I’ve been putting my leftover pulp in a container in the fridge, and then using it in muffins. My husband (not a real fan...

Gourmet Raw Food with Robyn Unrau

Posted by on Apr 25, 2011 | 0 comments

I recently attended a two-day Gourmet Raw Food workshop given by Robyn Unrau, of RAW Fernie. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but during the course we enjoyed incredibly delicious raw meals (three each day), and by the end of the course I had learned how to create these meals at home, and felt inspired to live a healthier lifestyle. The first day began with Robyn, the other students and me sitting down to a delicious raw breakfast – milk and cereal, accompanied by fresh bread and raspberry jam. Now, this might sound a lot like what you have for breakfast every day, and that’s...

It’s Easter, and chocolate bunnies abound in every grocery store. If you’re feeling tempted, consider instead treating yourself to this incredibly rich, dense chocolate brownie. I served them after Easter dinner last night to my extended family, and everybody raved over them. One special thing about these brownies is that they are gluten-free (containing no grains of any sort), and lactose-free, making them a wonderful treat to serve your friends and family who are on restricted diets. Brownies (makes 16 brownies): What you need: – a food processor – a hand-held...

What’s For Lunch? Try Cilantro ‘Tabbouleh’ Salad

Posted by on Apr 14, 2011 | 0 comments

What should I have for lunch? If you work nine-to-five, then you’ve probably struggled with this question regularly – even daily! Of course there are many options. You can go to a restaurant near where you work ($$$). You can go to a fast-food place near where you work (cheaper). You can eat at your company cafeteria, if there is one. All of these options are expensive, and will almost certainly result in long-term weight gain. Or you can bring something from home. Frozen prepared meals are a convenient option, but over time can become a little expensive, and are frequently...

Protect Yourself from Alzheimer’s Disease by Consuming More Vitamin E

Posted by on Apr 6, 2011 | 0 comments

According to a study published in the Archives of Neurology, getting more vitamin E from your diet – not supplements – offers significant protection from Alzheimer’s disease. In the Rotterdam Study, researchers from the Netherlands followed 5,395 healthy men and women, aged 55 and older, for 10 years to evaluate the link between vitamin E, vitamin C, beta carotene and flavonoids with the long-term risk of dementia. Participants whose diets provided the most vitamin E were 26 per cent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s compared to those who consumed the least. Vitamin C, beta-carotene...
